Virtually all sports require explosive action and extreme stability from the body in a high-demand setting. To enhance sports performance, it only makes sense that your exercise program mimics this environment, and focuses on improving the explosive strength that is needed for your sport.
High levels of explosive strength require:

- Structural Strength and Stability
- Highly Efficient Movement Patterns
- Proper Explosiveness Training Techniques
All top level athletes train in a functional setting, simply because it is the most cutting edge, effective style of training for developing the above requirements. In any given sport, your body has to stabilize itself through explosive movements. Working out in a setting where the body is unnaturally stabilized on a seat, bench, or machine takes away from explosive ability (and increases the risk of injury), and this just doesn't make sense.
When it comes to athletic performance, if you're not using functional training then you're not reaching your full potential.
